Tragedy struck near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Sunday, May 10, 2026, when Alexander Omogiate, a student who had just completed his Political Science examinations, was shot dead by masked gunmen.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed that Omogiate was driving a Mercedes-Benz GLK when he was intercepted at the Ugbowo main gate by assailants in another vehicle who opened fire at close range.
Three other occupants of the vehicle and a female passerby sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Following the incident, UNIBEN management issued a statement through PRO Benedicta Ehanire, distancing the school from the violence and claiming the clash was a result of external cult activities that did not involve university staff or students.
According to Qubes Magazine, the incident has triggered a leadership crisis within the institution's security framework.
Venerable Egbenusi Osazee David, Chairman of the Cult Renunciation Committee, resigned on Monday, alleging that Vice-Chancellor Prof. Edoba Omoregie pressured him to delete video evidence of the violence.
The university has dismissed these claims as "mischievous," insisting that the campus remains safe for academic activities.
