Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has once again defended the National Association of Seadogs (NAS), popularly known as the Pyrates Confraternity, against persistent "secret cult" labels.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony for the association’s new national secretariat in Abuja, Soyinka lamented that public misconceptions have unfairly overshadowed the group’s decades of humanitarian service and advocacy.

“The larger society still finds it difficult to accept the obvious, that this is not a secret cult,” Soyinka stated, questioning why genuine "diabolical cults" in Nigeria often escape the scrutiny faced by NAS.
The new secretariat, located at the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry complex, is intended to serve as a hub for civic advocacy and social justice campaigns.
NAS Capoon, Dr. Joseph Oteri, noted that the project represents the physical realization of the group’s ideals of human dignity and fearless advocacy established since 1952.
