The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has confirmed that at least 130 Nigerians have registered for voluntary evacuation from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic tensions.
The Minister revealed on Sunday that the evacuation plan follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu, who has ordered the protection of Nigerian lives and businesses a top priority.

While protests held between April 27 and 29, 2026, in Pretoria and Johannesburg were described as "largely peaceful," the Minister confirmed two separate deaths involving Nigerians.
Amamiro Chidiebere Emmanuel died on April 25 from injuries sustained during a brutal beating by the South African National Defence Force, while Nnaemeka Matthew Andrew was found dead after an encounter with the Tshwane Metro Police.
Nigeria has officially summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to demand justice, as another wave of demonstrations is expected between May 4 and 8.
