Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nigeria’s former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to a total of 75 years in prison.
The conviction follows a 12-count charge of money laundering and fraud involving N33.8 billion, a case brought forward by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The court found that Mamman conspired to convert billions intended for the Mambilla and Zungeru Hydroelectric Power projects.
Mamman was sentenced to seven years each on ten of the counts, with the terms set to run consecutively.
The judge criticized Mamman’s absence from the proceedings, labeling it a deliberate attempt to frustrate the legal system.
In addition to the jail term, the court ordered the final forfeiture of all properties and foreign currencies linked to the former minister, including high-value assets in Abuja.
According to Qubes Magazine, the court has directed Interpol and all national security agencies to arrest Mamman on sight.
Mamman, who served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, was found to have funneled diverted funds through Bureau De Change operators.
The judge emphasized that the jail term would officially commence from the day the convict is successfully apprehended and taken into custody.
