In what has been recorded as the largest and most sophisticated anti-narcotics operation in West African history, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully dismantled a massive transnational methamphetamine production syndicate.
Run jointly by a high-level Nigerian drug cartel and specialized Mexican cartel operatives, the enforcement blitz led to the arrest of 10 key suspects and the recovery of illicit substances valued at over N480 billion ($362,922,000).
The monumental security breakthrough was made public on Wednesday by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd.), during a high-profile media briefing at the agency’s central headquarters in Abuja.
Marwa revealed that elite operatives from the NDLEA Special Operations Unit executed a series of highly clinical, simultaneous raids in Ogun and Lagos states on Saturday, May 16, 2026, culminating months of precise intelligence gathering.
The industrial-scale laboratory, hidden deep within the remote Abidagba Forest in the Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, operated under the strategic guise of a regular rural farm.
It was actively managed by a syndicate known as the Anochili Innocent Drug Trafficking Organisation, producing massive weekly quantities of highly volatile crystallized methamphetamine.
Exposing the sheer scale and lethal nature of the illicit operation, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa stated:
“Through a clinical, simultaneous operation executed by the elite operatives of our Special Operations Unit, we have successfully dismantled a sophisticated, transnational methamphetamine production syndicate run jointly by a Nigerian drug cartel and their Mexican counterparts.
This network did not just traffic drugs; they were actively manufacturing industrial-scale quantities of highly lethal illicit substances right on our soil.
The operation yielded a massive 2,419.48 kilograms of chemical materials, including highly toxic, volatile, and crystallised methamphetamine worth over N480bn in the international market.
This represents millions of street doses that would have flooded our local communities, causing untold destruction, psychosis, and violence.”
Seven core cartel members were caught red-handed working inside the forest laboratory, including three Mexican nationals imported specifically for their technical expertise in mass-producing the drug: Martinez Nemecto (46), Jesus Valles (40), and Torrero Carlos (51). Their local Nigerian manufacturing assistants were identified as Nwankwo Christian (41), Igwe Remijus (42), Ifeanyichukwu Joshua (23), and Egwuonwu Victor (38).
In a synchronized strike, a tactical team stormed a luxury residence at No. 8 Tafawa Balewa Street, Golf Estate, Lakowe, Lekki, Lagos, where they arrested the organization’s billionaire kingpin, Anochili Innocent.
A search of his mansion uncovered the international passports and communication logs of the Mexican experts, proving his direct link to their illicit importation.
Follow-up operations on May 18 led to the arrest of logistics manager Kingsley Orike Omonughwa (44) at Mayfair Estate, Lekki, and a raid on a central stash house belonging to syndicate member Emeka Nwobum.
Alongside the massive haul of chemicals, the agency seized an operational Toyota Tacoma and a luxury Toyota Highlander used by the cartel boss. Marwa issued a stern warning to international syndicates, declaring Nigeria a highly hostile territory for global drug cartels.
