The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its crackdown on counterfeit products with the arraignment of Chidera Chukwuka, a 30-year-old trader, before a Federal High Court in Lagos.
Chukwuka faces a six-count charge related to the illegal manufacture and distribution of unwholesome alcoholic beverages.
The prosecution alleges that on April 14, 2026, the defendant was discovered at Apongbon, Lagos Island, in possession of fake versions of popular brands, including Johnnie Walker Red Label, Flirt Vodka, and Gordon’s Dry Gin.
NAFDAC’s counsel, Isa Ali, stated that the products were packaged in a misleading manner to deceive the public regarding their safety.
Chukwuka pleaded not guilty to all charges, which contravene the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act.
Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service until the commencement of the trial on June 1, 2026.
According to Qubes Magazine, the Apongbon area has remained a focal point for NAFDAC raids due to its history as a hub for the distribution of unregistered and adulterated consumer goods.
