Tactical operatives attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Ogun State Police Command have shot dead a notorious kidnapping kingpin during a fierce, early-morning gun battle inside the dense Orile-Ilugun Forest axis along the busy Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway.
The high-stakes jungle operation marks the second time in less than one week that the state's specialized anti-kidnapping squad has successfully neutralized a criminal syndicate leader.
According to an official press briefing released on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the raid was launched immediately after a hostage, who was abducted on May 14, 2026, at the Nufats Fuel Station in Odeda, was safely released by his captors.
Following the victim's release on Monday night, intelligence analysts mapped out the exact coordinates of the gang's wilderness base. At approximately 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, police commandos stormed the hideout, prompting an immediate shootout as the cornered criminals opened fire on the entering forces.
Detailing the violent encounter and the subsequent recovery of weapons, DSP Babaseyi stated:
“On sighting the police operatives, the kidnappers opened fire, resulting in a fierce gun duel. The operatives responded with superior tactical firepower, leading to the neutralisation of the gang’s kingpin, while other members of the syndicate fled into the forest with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
Recovered from the scene were one AK-47 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of 5.6mm ammunition, the sum of N2 million, and two mobile phones.”
The body of the unidentified slain suspect has been transferred to a state mortuary for a comprehensive autopsy, while specialized tracking canine units continue to comb the forest path to apprehend the surviving gang members who escaped with bullet wounds.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, highly commended the field operatives for their distinct gallantry and unwavering professionalism, assuring Ogun residents that the expressway remains safe as the command intensifies raids against criminal networks.
This operation follows a separate successful breakthrough just days prior, where operatives neutralized two bandits and arrested another high-profile kidnap boss, Seriki Mohammed Abdullahi.
