Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a presidential aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has openly criticized the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
Atiku described the move as a "setback" for the opposition’s goal of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that fielding another Southerner against a Southern incumbent is strategically flawed.
The NDC, led by Senator Seriake Dickson, reportedly adopted the zoning formula to accommodate Peter Obi, who recently defected from the ADC.
The current permutation suggests a Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket for 2027.

Atiku, through his media aide Olusola Sanni, argued that Nigeria’s history does not support an opposition candidate winning when they share the same geopolitical zone as the sitting president.
According to Qubes Magazine, Atiku also highlighted a "presidential imbalance," noting that by 2027, the South will have held the presidency for 18 years in the Fourth Republic compared to the North's 10.
He urged opposition leaders to move beyond "emotional appeals" and build a realistic national alliance instead of tailored arrangements for specific individuals.
