A cross-border smuggling operation involving millions of pounds worth of high-purity narcotics has been dismantled by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), following the sentencing of a corrupt commercial driver who used a legitimate commercial consignment of reality TV star Kim Kardashian’s famous clothing line, SKIMS, to conceal his illicit payload.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Polish national Jakub Jan Konkel, was sentenced on Monday at Chelmsford Crown Court to 13 years and six months in prison.
Konkel's legal downfall began when his heavy goods vehicle (HGV) was flagged for secondary inspection by suspicious Border Force officers at the Port of Harwich in Essex, immediately after rolling off an international commercial ferry arriving from the Hook of Holland, Netherlands.
The truck's cargo manifest listed a completely legitimate, authorized shipment of 28 heavy pallets loaded with SKIMS brand underwear and body-sculpting shapewear destined for distribution centers.
However, a comprehensive X-ray scan of the vehicle's structural frame exposed a highly advanced, purpose-built concealment zone constructed inside the skin of the trailer's rear back doors.

Inside the hidden compartment, enforcement agents extracted 90 tightly wrapped rectangular packages weighing exactly one kilogram each. Forensics confirmed the contents as high-grade cocaine, carrying an estimated street market value of over £7.2 million (approximately $9.4 million).
NCA Operations Manager Paul Orchard exposed the mechanics behind the international syndicate's operations, noting:
“Organised crime groups use corrupt drivers like Konkel to move Class A drugs often hidden on entirely legitimate loads such as this.
The cargo of SKIMS clothing was entirely authentic, and neither the European exporter nor the UK importer had any knowledge or connection to the smuggling plot.
Our post-arrest digital analysis of Konkel's tachograph system revealed an un-declared 16-minute stop during his journey through the Netherlands, which is precisely where the crime group integrated the drugs into the modified door frame.”
Although Konkel initially maintained a stance of total ignorance during aggressive preliminary interrogations, he ultimately entered a guilty plea to formal charges of drug smuggling.
He confessed to investigators that he had compromised his professional transport position after agreeing to serve as a logistics courier for a promised flat payout of 4,500 Euros (around $5,243).
Border Force Assistant Director Jason Thorn praised the multi-agency interception, stating that the operation successfully deprived a dangerous international network of multi-million-pound profit margins.
