Rivers Police Apprehend Social Media Kidnap Syndicate, Rescue Three Victims
Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have recorded a major breakthrough after arresting three high-profile kidnappers who specialized in luring victims into the state via social media.
The suspects were caught while attempting to abduct a victim invited from Anambra State under the pretext of an interior decoration job.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, identified the arrested suspects as Hinedu Okoro (38), Okwudiri Njoku (32), and Onyema Sunday (25).
The gang allegedly used images of reputable personalities on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, X, and Tinder to gain the trust of unsuspecting victims before kidnapping them for ransom.
"The suspects specialise in luring unsuspecting victims from different parts of the country through social media platforms... using the images of reputable personalities to gain trust," Agabe stated.
The police successfully rescued two other victims who were being held hostage. Investigations revealed the gang had previously kidnapped individuals from Lagos and Enugu.
While the gang's operational motorcycle was recovered, the leader of the syndicate remains at large.
Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, urged residents to be cautious of online job offers and to verify identities before meeting strangers.
