Lufthansa Pilot and Crew Strike Leaves Nigerian Travelers Stranded in Germany
A wave of industrial action by Lufthansa pilots and cabin crew has left scores of Nigerian passengers stranded, with many forced to sleep at Frankfurt Airport.
The strikes, staged by the Vereinigung Cockpit and the Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organisation, come amid heated negotiations over pay, pensions, and working conditions.
The walkouts have caused massive disruptions at major German hubs, affecting up to 90% of operations in some cases.
While some travelers were rebooked onto Royal Air Maroc, passengers reported a "horrible" experience, citing poor communication and technical delays that saw them abandoned in transit hotels or airport terminals.
Lufthansa has responded to the economic pressure by announcing the permanent decommissioning of its regional subsidiary, Lufthansa CityLine, starting April 18, 2026.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed it has been notified of the situation, noting that rebooking passengers on alternative carriers is a standard regulatory response to such crises.
