Bayelsa State Police Command arresting suspects for stealing NDDC solar streetlights in Sagbama

Vigilant Hunter Apprehends Suspects Attempting to Steal NDDC Solar Lights in Bayelsa

A local hunter in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has successfully foiled an attempt by vandals to steal solar-powered streetlights.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, along the Bulou-Orua–Ebedebiri Road.

The suspects, identified as Ayebademone Peremobowei and Peres John from Tungbo town, were caught in the act. The hunter raised an alarm, leading to their immediate apprehension.

Confirming the arrest, Police Spokesman DSP Musa Mohammed stated that the suspects are currently in custody at the Police Command Headquarters in Yenagoa for investigation and prosecution.

Residents of Sagbama have expressed growing concern over the theft of infrastructure, noting that over 100 solar lights installed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under the "Light Up Niger Delta" initiative have gone missing.

This wave of vandalism has left many rural communities in darkness, undermining federal efforts to improve security and rural electrification.

In a similar incident in December 2024, two vandals were electrocuted in the same area while attempting to dismantle streetlight poles.
