In the ongoing trial of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, a key witness has revealed how $6.23 million was allegedly moved from the bank using fraudulent means.
Testifying before Justice Hamza Muazu at the FCT High Court on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police Eloho Edwin Okpoziakpo stated that some suspects had already confessed to the scheme.
According to Punch Online, Okpoziakpo was part of the special team investigating government entities under the direction of Jim Obaze.
The witness told the court that intelligence pointed to the money being withdrawn from the CBN Abuja branch under the guise of paying international election observers.
However, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) denied ever making such a request.
“Investigation revealed that the money was fraudulently taken because some of the suspects... confessed,” Okpoziakpo stated.
He further identified documents used to facilitate the withdrawal, including a letter carrying a forged presidential approval from former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The case has been adjourned until July 2 for further hearing.
