Army Expresses Regret After NYSC Member Dies During Shootout with Robbers in Abuja
The Nigerian Army's Guards Brigade has confirmed the tragic death of a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, during a security incident in the early hours of Saturday, April 25, 2026.
The incident occurred at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, within the Federal Capital Territory, when troops responded to a distress call regarding an ongoing armed robbery.
According to Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, troops of the Quick Response Group engaged fleeing robbers in an intense exchange of gunfire, during which Jamiu was caught in the crossfire.
While the Army maintains that the victim was hit during the "fluid and volatile" engagement, social media reports have alleged the deceased was shot inside his room.
The Brigade has launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances of the tragedy. Jamiu’s remains have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
