Police Arrest Community Head and Four Others Over Alleged Sexual Assaults at Ozoro Festival
The Delta State Police Command has taken decisive action following the viral reports of women being harassed, molested, and allegedly raped during the annual Ozoro festival.
On Friday, police spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed the arrest of five individuals, including the community head and chief organizer of the event, Chief Omorede Sunday.
The arrests followed widespread outrage on social media after videos surfaced showing groups of young men in Oramudu quarters forcefully tearing the clothes of women and subjecting them to various forms of molestation.
According to local accounts, a controversial tradition allegedly requires women to stay indoors during the festival, with those found outside becoming targets for harassment.
Commissioner of Police Aina Adesola has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
“No custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens,” Edafe stated, describing the incidents as “alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing.”
The Delta State Government, through Commissioner Charles Aniagwu, condemned the acts as barbaric and unacceptable, reinforcing a zero-tolerance policy for gender-based violence.
While some social media users under the hashtag #StopRapingWomen have called for the total abolition of such cultures, the police have vowed that every individual involved in the heinous acts will be brought to justice.
