NDLEA Proposes Mandatory Drug Tests for Students and NYSC Members in Rivers State
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called for the immediate introduction of drug integrity tests within Nigerian schools and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
The State Commander of NDLEA, CN Bature Dawa, made the proposal during a courtesy visit to the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, in Port Harcourt.
The agency argues that these measures are essential to discourage drug abuse among the youth and protect the state's future.
During the visit, Dawa revealed that the command has arrested 39 drug suspects in Rivers State between December 2025 and March 2026, with 16 cases currently undergoing active investigation.
“Our Governor is committed to peace, progress, and prosperity in Rivers State. I therefore encourage all residents, especially young people, to stay away from drugs,” stated the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, who received the agency on behalf of Governor Fubara.
The NDLEA also issued a stern warning to hotel owners and managers, urging them to ensure their facilities are not used as hubs for illicit drug activities.
Wokoma commended the synergy between federal agencies and the state government, reiterating that the Fubara administration will continue to support programs aimed at strengthening public safety.
The visit also featured the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CC Inyang Umoh, who joined the call for law-abiding behavior and road safety awareness among residents to sustain the state’s security and social order.
