NDLEA Operatives Allegedly Aided Cocaine Deal, Convicts Narrate in Abba Kyari’s Trial
Drama unfolded at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday as video evidence was played showing two convicted drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, alleging that officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) assisted them in bypassing security.
The video, played at the request of the legal team for suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, captures the convicts’ interrogation following their arrest in January 2022.
The duo, who have already served two-year jail terms, claimed they were shielded by anti-narcotic agents at the Enugu International Airport.
“My picture will be sent to the NDLEA (officers) at the airport by the person who sent me this thing (cocaine). When we get to the airport, they will now know us and clear us,” Ezenwanne narrated in the video.
Umeibe further alleged that the officers would "open the bag and cover it again" without conducting a thorough search because they had been pre-alerted of the arrival.
The video evidence, marked as Exhibit D-3, is a cornerstone of the defense for Kyari and his co-defendants—ACP Sunday J. Ubua, ASP Bawa James, and others.
They are being prosecuted for allegedly tampering with 21.35kg of cocaine recovered from these traffickers.
Justice Emeka Nwite has adjourned the trial until April 20 and 21, 2026, for further examination of the evidence.
