Traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex have shut down operations to protest a proposed takeover of market administration by state and local government officials, sparking concerns over potential increases in levies and taxes.
The protest, which began early Wednesday morning, saw hundreds of traders locking up their shops and stalls across the complex, gathering around parks and garages as discussions continued.
The ASPANDA Market within the complex—one of the largest spare parts markets in Lagos—was among the sections affected by the shutdown.
Traders expressed deep concern about the ramifications of the proposed management change, emphasizing that the complex is a federal institution and requesting additional consultations before any alterations to its administrative structure are implemented.
"We are not against development, but we are concerned about the possible levies and taxes that may be introduced if the management structure changes," a trader who identified himself as Emeka Onu told journalists at the scene.
The development drew the attention of Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, who visited the market during the day as part of efforts to engage with traders and encourage the reopening of the complex.
Before commencing her tour of the market, the minister urged that the gates of the complex be opened to traders, stating that her visit was aimed at interacting with stakeholders and supporting the smooth conduct of business activities.
The protest highlights the ongoing tensions between federal authorities, local government officials, and traders regarding the administration of major commercial hubs in Lagos.
Traders maintain that the complex has operated effectively under federal management and have called for more inclusive dialogue before any changes are enacted.
As of press time, negotiations between traders and government officials were ongoing, with stakeholders hopeful for a resolution that would address the concerns of all parties involved.
