President Tinubu Secures French Military Support to Combat Insecurity
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, securing a commitment from French President Emmanuel Macron for advanced military equipment and specialized training.
Speaking on Sunday at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, Tinubu informed state governors that the deal was finalized during a lengthy phone conversation with Macron on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
According to excerpts of the address provided to Punch, the President emphasized that Nigeria is ready to leverage its international lines of credit to modernize the nation's defense capabilities.
"I can report to you... their collaboration with us for equipment and support," Tinubu stated, adding that insecurity is the "next major challenge" his administration is determined to defeat.
This diplomatic win follows Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, where he also discussed military acquisitions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The President’s push for international military aid comes on the heels of the devastating Maiduguri suicide bombings that killed 23 people last week.
Tinubu acknowledged that global crises, including the war in the Middle East, are driving up domestic inflation and fuel prices, but maintained that national security remains the priority.
He urged the state governors to remain united, declaring that the government must invest in technology to achieve a "victory over tyranny" and safeguard the lives of all Nigerians.
