Federal Government Condemns Ozoro Festival Sexual Assaults; Demands Immediate Prosecution of Offenders
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has officially condemned the reported sexual harassment and assault of women during the recent Ozoro festival in Delta State.
In a statement released on Friday, the government described the viral incidents—where women were reportedly chased and molested—as a "serious violation of human dignity" and a breach of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act.
The Ministry emphasized that no cultural or traditional practice can serve as a shield for sexual violence.
This follows a global outcry after videos surfaced showing groups of men attacking women in Isoko North Local Government Area.
The FG has now demanded a transparent and expedited investigation to ensure all perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
“Protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls remains a priority under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” the Ministry stated. “Victims must have access to justice without fear or intimidation.”
The Federal Government further disclosed plans to partner with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to provide medical, legal, and psychosocial support for the affected victims.
Additionally, the Ministry intends to engage traditional institutions and community leaders to address and eliminate harmful cultural practices that promote social disharmony and violence against women.
