Veteran actress and activist Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has revealed that her children receiving death threats during the 2020 EndSARS protests marked a terrifying turning point, forcing her to rethink her approach to advocacy.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds on Sunday, the 48-year-old star stated that while she was accustomed to personal threats, the targeting of her family was unprecedented.
“I am used to death threats; I have received them many times,” Omotola said. “But I have never seen anything like what happened during EndSARS. It was intense, my kids started getting death threats. That was when it became real, and when I realised this was no longer just about me.”
She described the fear when protesters began coming to her home and workplace. “When people started coming to my home and workplace looking for me, I knew it was time to think beyond myself. I had to protect others, especially my children,” she added.
This traumatic experience led her to shift from frontline street protests to more strategic and focused forms of advocacy. She cited the growing independence of her children as a key factor. “I can’t control where they go. I can’t protect them as much. I don’t care for my life, but I do care for them,” Omotola explained.
Her revelation sheds light on the personal risks public figures and their families faced during the tense period of the nationwide protests against police brutality.
