A Nigerian student residing in the United Kingdom has been convicted and given a suspended sentence for fraudulently working in NHS hospitals using false identification, despite having no medical qualifications.
Oluwabunmu Adeleiyi, 30, who lived in Cardiff on a student visa, was employed through agencies at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and the Caswell Clinic in Bridgend. Cardiff Crown Court heard she and two accomplices used shared fake IDs to fraudulently bill the NHS around £16,000 monthly.
Adeleiyi pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation. She was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently, suspended for two years. She was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service.
The fraud was uncovered after hospital staff noticed discrepancies on Adeleiyi’s ID card following a night shift. Investigations revealed the alarming truth: she had no training in patient restraint yet had accessed confidential patient records and entered locked, restricted wards.
Health officials warned that her actions, performed without any formal medical training, could have posed “catastrophic” risks to patient safety. The case highlights severe vulnerabilities in NHS agency staff vetting processes and the potential dangers of identity fraud within critical healthcare settings.
