There was tension in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday after gunmen attacked people around the Afor Market Junction. Residents said the attackers arrived suddenly and opened fire on people in the area. Many ran for safety, while some were feared killed during the incident.


According to a report by Punch news on Monday 8 December, 2025, people living close to the scene said they were still in shock because the attack happened without warning. One resident explained that the gunmen came into the junction and started shooting immediately, leaving several persons injured and others feared dead.


Another eyewitness said the attack caused serious panic as people ran in different directions. Security agencies were contacted soon after the incident, and the police have already begun investigating what happened.


In a statement, the President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirmed the attack and described it as a painful loss for the community. He said multiple casualties were recorded and urged residents to remain calm while security operatives continue their work.


Okoye also sent his condolences to families affected by the incident and assured the community that efforts are ongoing to restore peace.


Police authorities have not given an official statement, but a security source said investigations have started and those responsible will be tracked down.


The community is awaiting further updates from security agencies as calm slowly returns to the area.
