Simi Slams Artistes Who Sign Others for Status, Says Music Business Is Not a Game

In a candid interview with media personality VJ Adams, Simi explained that while she supports mentorship in the industry, she believes it is “unfair” for artistes to sign others just to tick a milestone.

“I can sign an artist,” Simi said, “but I think that it’s not fair when an artist signs another artist just as a milestone. Because for that artist, it’s just a passion project—not necessarily to accomplish a meaningful goal. But then, that’s their life.”

Simi argued that managing an artiste requires dedication, patience, and business passion, not just star power. She emphasized that the responsibility of building another person's career should be taken seriously.

“The only people that should sign artists are people who really have a passion for the music business,” she added. “So that whether or not the artist is thriving at the moment, they will still believe in the artist. Whether or not the song that you thought would blow didn’t blow, are you still willing to keep going?”

The Duduke crooner reflected on her own experience during her early career, revealing that when she was getting signed, her major concern was how the label perceived her.

“How do you see me? Am I just a box you’re ticking or is it as important to you as it is to me?” she questioned.

Simi acknowledged that while she might consider signing an artiste in the future, she’s currently unsure whether she possesses the drive and long-term energy needed to nurture another talent.

Her comments have sparked discussions on social media, with fans and industry insiders praising her honesty and advocating for better artist-label relationships in the Nigerian music scene.
