Renowned Nigerian producer ID Cabasa has clapped back at Akon after the Senegalese-American artist claimed he played a key role in creating Afrobeats. During an interview on Wazobia FM, Cabasa dismissed Akon’s recent statements on a U.S. talk show where he took credit for the genre’s global rise.
"Akon no create Afrobeats," Cabasa stated bluntly in Pidgin. He emphasized that the genre was already thriving in Nigeria through artists like 2Baba, 9ice, and Timaya long before Akon’s involvement.
Cabasa also corrected Akon’s claim about signing Wizkid, clarifying that Banky W’s EME first discovered the superstar before any partnership with Akon’s Konvict Music.
While acknowledging Akon’s contributions in promoting Nigerian music internationally, Cabasa stressed that Afrobeats is a cultural movement, not the brainchild of one person. His comments have sparked heated debates online, with many Nigerians supporting his stance.
