A major illegal refinery and petrol station have been uncovered in Anambra State following a joint operation by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Army, and Navy. The illicit facility, located at Y-Junction, Nkwelle Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area, was raided on Saturday, May 11, 2025, after credible intelligence tipped off authorities.
NSCDC State Commandant Olatunde Maku confirmed the operation in a statement released on Sunday. According to Maku, security forces recovered 49 kegs of 25 litres each containing suspected adulterated Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) and four 200-litre drums filled with fake Premium Motor Spirit (petrol). A pumping machine was also seized during the raid.
One suspect was apprehended, while others fled the scene. The arrested individual has been handed over to the NSCDC for prosecution. Maku warned illegal refinery operators and fraudsters impersonating PROTEAN officials to steer clear of Anambra, vowing that the command would intensify crackdowns on economic saboteurs.
He praised the collaboration between the NSCDC, Army, and Navy, reaffirming their commitment to eradicating illegal petroleum activities in the state. Investigations are ongoing to track down fleeing suspects.
