Tunisia’s electoral commission has approved just three candidates for the upcoming presidential election, ignoring a court order to reinstate three others.

President Kais Saied and Ayachi Zammel are among the candidates, despite Saied facing accusations of restricting competition. 

The court had previously ruled in favor of reinstating three barred candidates, but the commission claimed it did not receive the ruling in time. 

This development raises concerns about the transparency and fairness of the election, marking another step away from the democratic gains made during the Arab Spring.

Rights groups have criticized the exclusion of other candidates, alleging a lack of political freedom under Saied’s rule.
