Uganda and Kenya Demand Verification of Nigerian Students’ Degrees Amid Fake Certificate Scandal

This development follows a growing concern over the proliferation of fake degree certificates, which has cast a shadow on the credibility of foreign students' qualifications.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria disclosed that it has been receiving requests from these countries to verify the authenticity of records submitted by Nigerian candidates seeking admission into their tertiary institutions.

JAMB stressed that it would not falsify any records and is committed to upholding the standards of Nigerian education.
This new verification process is part of a broader crackdown on certificate racketeering, which has been a significant issue in several African countries, including Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, Uganda, and Kenya.

The Nigerian government has recently taken stringent measures to address this problem, including suspending the verification of degree certificates from certain countries.
The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, emphasized the importance of protecting Nigeria’s education system from disrepute. He reiterated that universities in Nigeria must conduct admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) and regularly submit matriculation lists to the Federal Ministry of Education.
