Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command attached to the Ifo Division have recovered a 2016 Toyota Camry just eight hours after it was allegedly stolen by a newly hired driver in Lagos State.
The driver, identified as Waidi Olajide Kolawole, was employed merely two days prior by an Indian national based at the Ilupeju Industrial Estate, Lagos.
On September 9, 2026, Kolawole allegedly absconded with the vehicle under the pretext of taking it to a nearby vulcaniser to repair a flat tyre.
Following an immediate report by the owner, police operatives deployed electronic tracking devices to locate the vehicle's movement towards Ogun State.
Disclosing the development in a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, detailed that the DPO of Ifo Division, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi, mobilized surveillance and anti-robbery teams to track the car.
The operatives traced the stolen vehicle through multiple routes, eventually surrounding a hotel in Ifo at approximately 8:30 pm.
On sighting law enforcement officers, Kolawole fled the scene with the ignition key, leaving behind his alleged accomplice, Monday Adetunji, who was promptly arrested.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the suspects had earlier approached a local mechanic to remove the vehicle’s catalytic converter, but the mechanic declined.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their swift response and use of technology. The command reiterated the importance of vehicle tracking systems and advised hoteliers and employers to carry out thorough due diligence and verification.
