The Olokola Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ) has surged to the forefront of national and continental economic discussions following a massive announcement from Dangote Industries Limited.
The project is trending heavily because Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, has officially activated plans to construct a multi-billion-dollar deep seaport spanning over 10,000 hectares along the Atlantic coastline, sitting across the borders of Ogun and Ondo states.
The news gained massive traction as a high-powered Dangote delegation, led by Captain Jamil Abubakar (Managing Director of Infrastructure and Logistics), began direct stakeholder engagements and land surveys within host communities like Ode-Omi in Ogun and Araromi Seaside in Ondo.
Designed to support the massive logistics and export demands of the Dangote refinery, fertilizer plants, and petrochemical complexes, the Olokola port project represents a critical revival of long-term maritime ambitions for the region.
Financial and maritime experts are driving the conversation online, noting that the infrastructure will heavily alleviate pressure on Lagos' congested hubs and significantly boost Nigeria's competitive edge under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.
Maritime advocates emphasize that without such modern deep-sea infrastructure, West and Central Africa risk losing global shipping relevance due to aging port limitations.
