Aso Rock Power Politics: How President Tinubu Reacted to Rumors That Shettima Planned to Kill Him to Take Power

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has made a stunning revelation regarding a coordinated political conspiracy engineered by northern detractors to permanently destroy his administrative relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu barely three months after their 2023 inauguration.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during the formal public presentation of the autobiography of former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Shettima exposed the bizarre lengths to which political saboteurs went to spark paranoia within the presidency.

The Vice-President explained that during the intensive 2023 APC presidential campaign cycle, he provided Tinubu with traditional northern caps and fabrics to help him blend seamlessly with northern crowds.

However, after their electoral victory, a delegation from Borno State approached the President with claims that the clothes were laced with dark spiritual charms designed to assassinate him so Shettima could ascend to the presidency.

Praising the political maturity and skepticism of his principal, Shettima recalled the direct conversation that transpired between them upon his return from an official diplomatic mission to China:

“To the eternal credit of the president. When I came back from China, where I represented him, he said, ‘sit down. your people came to me and said I should stop wearing those garments you gave me.’ But he said their story did not add up because when you gave those garments, I was an aspirant.

For one week to prove to them that he is not fetish, he wore those garments. These are some of the gimmicks that are taking place in power circles in Nigeria nowadays.”

The Vice-President utilized the high-profile platform to draw a sharp contrast between current political paranoia and the historic trust that existed during General Gowon's military administration, noting how the Sultan of Sokoto’s family safely sent traditional refreshments to Dodan Barracks weekly without fear of poisoning.

Reflecting on Gowon’s legacy, Shettima implored modern Nigerian citizens to reject sectarian division, praising the elder statesman's historic political foresight in establishing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to combat transnational insecurity and drive economic integration.
