The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa'ad Abubakar III, has strongly dismissed fears of a secret plan by Muslims to eliminate Christians in Nigeria, describing such narratives as a product of misunderstanding and suspicion.
Speaking at the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Sultan emphasized that coexistence is the only viable path for the nation.
The Sultan, who co-chairs NIREC, also issued a stern warning to those who commit atrocities in the name of Islam. “Somebody can go to the market, blow his or herself up, kill people and shout ‘Allahu Akbar’... you are going to hell,” he declared.

He urged Nigerians to stop labeling perpetrators by their faith and instead refer to them simply as criminals.
He attributed much of the tension to ignorance, noting that linguistic ability in Arabic does not equal religious authority.
According to Qubes Magazine, the meeting was also attended by CAN President Daniel Okoh and SGF George Akume.
Archbishop Okoh advocated for "religious literacy"—the cultivation of sensitivity and respect for other beliefs—as a tool to de-escalate social and political conflicts wrongly framed as religious wars.
SGF Akume echoed these sentiments, promising government support for inclusive education to challenge divisive assumptions.
