Grammy-nominated Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has opened up about being "cancelled" within the Nigerian music industry for over a decade.
Speaking on the Selah Meditate podcast, the youngest son of legend Fela Kuti claimed he has been blacklisted for 13 years due to his refusal to stop critiquing the government through his music.
Kuti alleged that the Nigerian government deliberately invests in non-political artists to drown out those who speak "truth to power."
He traced the peak of his suppression back to a performance at an event hosted by former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, after which his music faced severe restrictions on local airwaves.
“Nigeria has cancelled me a long time, but Nigeria is just like a really small percentage of my market. So, being cancelled doesn’t really affect me,” he stated confidently.
The musician argued that many contemporary artists avoid social commentary because they fear losing their local audience or facing government repercussions.
According to Qubes Magazine, Seun Kuti continues to tour extensively in Europe and the Americas, where his "protest-driven" style remains highly profitable, insulating him from the domestic restrictions he describes.
