A 39-year-old Ireland-based Nigerian national, Brian Ogbo, has been sentenced by the Cork Circuit Criminal Court to three and a half years in prison for the manslaughter of his 82-year-old grandmother, Stella Nnadi.
The tragic killing occurred during what presiding Judge Sinead Behan described as a severe, acute psychotic episode, brought about by critical breakdowns within Ireland's public healthcare infrastructure.
Ogbo, who relocated from Nigeria to Carrigaline, County Cork, in December 2024 to live with his mother and grandmother, had previously entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
The court heard that Ogbo was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2017 and relied heavily on monthly anti-psychotic injections to manage his condition.

His mother, Ruby Ogbo, a professional social worker, had made repeated, increasingly desperate attempts to navigate the Irish mental health framework to secure her son’s required prescriptions upon his arrival.
Due to systemic bureaucratic delays, the defendant missed two consecutive monthly medical treatments.
On February 23, 2025, Ogbo began displaying volatile behaviors, pacing the family residence, destroying kitchen property, and eventually turning aggressive following a dispute over household resources and internet connectivity.
After assaulting his mother, Ogbo broke down a bathroom door where his grandmother had sought safety, inflicting blunt force trauma that resulted in fatal brain hemorrhaging two days later.
During the sentencing, Judge Behan highly criticized regional psychiatric care administrators, pointing out "unforgivable failures" in the delivery of support services and noting that the death could arguably have been prevented entirely.
In a bitter twist of timing, an official treatment appointment letter from the state healthcare department arrived by post at the family home exactly two days after the fatal attack took place.
Taking into account Ogbo's clean criminal record, early guilty plea, and continued emotional backing from his grieving family, the judge imposed a five-year sentence with the final 18 months suspended, backdated to his initial custody remand.
