Tensions in the Middle East have reached a boiling point as Iran warned on Monday that any United States attempt to interfere in the Strait of Hormuz would be viewed as a direct violation of the current ceasefire.
This warning follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of “Project Freedom,” a new maritime operation designed to escort commercial vessels through the blocked waterway.
The strategic strait has been under a stranglehold by Tehran following recent US-Israeli strikes, a move that has choked off global supplies of oil, gas, and fertilizer.
According to reports from AFP, President Trump described the mission as a "humanitarian" gesture to assist crews stranded in the blockade who are running low on essential supplies.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated, “If in any way, this Humanitarian process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully.”
In a sharp rebuttal, Iranian officials labeled the US plan "piracy." Mohsen Rezaei, a military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, took to X (formerly Twitter) to warn that Iranian forces are prepared to sink American warships, telling the US to "prepare to face a graveyard of your carriers."
With over 900 commercial vessels currently stuck in the Gulf and oil prices sitting 50% above pre-conflict levels, European allies have called for an immediate diplomatic resolution to prevent further global economic collapse.
