A major manhunt is underway for Ifedayo Adeyeye, a British-Nigerian man who fled the United Kingdom after being mistakenly released from HMP Pentonville.
Adeyeye was serving a sentence for the abduction of his son, Laurys, whom he had illegally taken from France to Nigeria.
Despite being handed a new 12-month sentence on April 20, 2026, for failing to return the child, he was accidentally freed the very next day due to a communication failure between court and prison officials.
The court heard on Monday that prison authorities failed to notify the police of the error for three days, giving Adeyeye a significant head start.

Scotland Yard believes he left the UK for Spain on April 22. The judge criticized the "alarming lack of urgency" from the prison service, stating that the public deserves better and that the escape likely could have been prevented had the police been informed immediately.

Adeyeye’s victim, the child’s mother Claire N’Djosse, remains in a "traumatic" state as police continue to pursue international lines of inquiry to locate the fugitive and the child.
