FUTA in Mourning: 100-Level Student Found Dead Near Off-Campus Hostel

Police investigators at the scene near FUTA where a student's body was discovered



The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the tragic death of Favour Olaniyi, a 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). 

Olaniyi, who was studying Surveying and Geoinformatics, was found lifeless in a bush near the university's North Gate on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

According to Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abayomi Jimoh, detectives found no visible marks of violence on the body, but a bottle containing a suspected poisonous substance was recovered at the scene.

The case is currently being treated as a suspected suicide.

According to Qubes Magazine, the university management has expressed deep sadness over the loss, with Director of Corporate Communication Adegbenro Adebanjo confirming that counseling support is being provided to impacted students. 

The deceased’s body has been deposited at the morgue for a post-mortem examination as the police work to determine the final circumstances surrounding the incident.
