A devastating vehicular accident occurred along the busy Gombe–Yola highway on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic deaths of a female police officer and an unidentified male pedestrian after a heavy-duty truck suffered sudden brake failure and ploughed violently into a local market square.
The horror crash transpired at the popular New Mile 3 Market axis. Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted that the large DAF truck, heavily laden with commercial bags of grain, was traveling inbound from the Taraba State border when the vehicle's braking mechanism completely failed.
In a desperate bid to manage the situation, the driver reportedly attempted to divert the runaway vehicle through a one-way path into a nearby filling station, losing absolute control and smashing through roadside traders, helpless passersby, and built-up shopfronts.
The Gombe State Police Command officially confirmed the catastrophic accident details through its designated spokesperson, Buhari Abdullahi, noting that the truck collided with multiple stationary vehicles and structures.
Detailing the casualties and immediate damage to property, the police spokesperson confirmed:
“The accident involved a DAF truck with registration number XH 122 GME, three motorcycles, pedestrians and several shops.
As a result of the accident, two persons, namely Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, attached to the Communications Department of the Gombe State Command, and one unidentified male pedestrian, regrettably lost their lives, while two other persons, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
The accident also caused damage to three motorcycles and some nearby shops.”
The Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Ahmed Chuso, extended his deepest condolences to the family of the fallen officer and the civilian victim, using the tragic occasion to issue a strict directive to all regional motorists against violating basic traffic layout regulations.
He strongly urged long-distance haulage companies to prioritize rigorous mechanical maintenance to eliminate preventable mechanical failures on public roads.
Reacting to the incident, the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, described the market crash as deeply heartbreaking and entirely unfortunate. While offering comfort to the grieving families and wishing the wounded survivors a rapid clinical recovery, Governor Yahaya firmly reminded operators of heavy-duty transport vehicles that careful driving, strict adherence to weight limits, and compliance with traffic codes remain the only absolute shields against tragic highway disasters.
