Senate President Godswill Akpabio stirred the upper chamber on Tuesday with a witty jab at the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring the party "effectively dead."
This remark followed a massive wave of defections that saw prominent lawmakers, including Senator Victor Umeh, dump the party for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Presiding over the plenary, Akpabio noted that the frequency of floor announcements was beginning to feel like a "daily ritual."
He suggested that lawmakers moving from the same party should simply compile their names on a single list to save time.
“Maybe all those defecting from ADC should just compile everything in one paper... Because I think ADC is dead,” Akpabio quipped, drawing laughter from the floor.
He also highlighted Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe’s move from APGA to ADC, and finally to the Labour Party.
The political shift isn't limited to the Senate; no fewer than 16 members of the House of Representatives have also moved from the ADC to the NDC. Senator Umeh cited "unending litigation" and leadership crises as his reasons for leaving.
According to Qubes Magazine, this realignment marks a significant restructuring of the National Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the newly formed NDC emerging as a major beneficiary of the ADC's internal friction.
