Crisis in Pretoria: Nigeria Demands Justice After Security Personnel Allegedly Kill Two Citizens
Fresh xenophobic violence in South Africa has claimed the lives of two Nigerians, Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew, sparking international outrage and urgent diplomatic intervention.
The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg confirmed that Emmanuel died after an alleged assault by South African National Defence Force personnel, while Andrew’s body was found in a mortuary following an altercation with the Tshwane Metro Police.
Consul-General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche has called for a transparent investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), warning against the "collective criminalization" of Nigerians.
These killings occur amid a backdrop of viral videos showing mobs intimidating foreign traders.
While South African President Cyril Ramaphosa urged foreigners to respect local laws during his Freedom Day address, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has issued a safety advisory, urging citizens in Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg to remain vigilant and temporarily shut businesses where necessary.
