Nigerian singer Fave has raised an alarm over an alleged industry-wide directive prohibiting music concerts and shows during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which has thwarted her plans for a birthday performance.
The ‘Baby Riddim’ crooner, whose real name is Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle to express her confusion and frustration. She revealed that her plan to host her first major show in Nigeria on her birthday, March 13, has been repeatedly rejected by promoters because it falls within Ramadan.
“So I was tryna do a show in Nigeria on my birthday this year but they’re telling me shows aren’t allowed during Ramadan? I’m a little confused,” she wrote in her initial post.
In a follow-up, the independent artiste elaborated on the setback, stating, “I started this year wanting to do my first show in Nigeria on my birthday... and back to back, promoters kept sending word to my team saying the same thing.”
Fave, who is a Christian, expressed respect for all religions but argued that the observance should not impede her business. “I grew up in the south and never heard of Ramadan practices till I was in my late teens... But I’m Christian and I really want to do this on my birthday,” she explained, ending her post with an open call for any willing promoter to organize the event.
Her outcry has sparked a debate online about the blending of religious observance with the entertainment industry’s calendar, and whether such unofficial bans are enforceable or fair to artists of other faiths.
