The Abia State Police Command has apprehended a man identified as Edward Okorie for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, a young nurse named Sophy Chika. The tragic incident occurred on Monday at Isiugwu, in the Ohafia Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports gathered on Tuesday, the couple, who had been cohabiting in Okagwe village, Ohafia, for over three years, were involved in a domestic dispute that turned fatal. The deceased, hailing from Ozu Abam in the Arochukwu LGA, reportedly lost her life after an argument escalated into violence. A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed the gravity of the situation. "The incident happened in the early hours of Monday at Isiugwu Ohafia. They had a misunderstanding, which reportedly escalated, and she was allegedly beaten to death," the source stated.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, verified that the suspect is in custody. DSP Chinaka explained that the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia had alerted the command to the incident. She assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. "Yes, the attention of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Ohafia, was drawn to the incident. The suspect has been apprehended, and the case will be transferred to the SCID today (Tuesday) by the DPO," she told Punch Metro.
DSP Chinaka further assured the citizens of Abia State that the command has launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the death of the nurse. The tragic event has plunged the Abam community into mourning, with residents and family members fervently calling for justice and a detailed probe into the matter to ensure the perpetrator faces the full weight of the law.
