Veteran music icon 2Baba has weighed in on the perennial "Afrobeats Big Three" debate, declaring Burna Boy the current leading artist, ahead of contemporaries Wizkid and Davido both in Nigeria and on the global stage.
Speaking on the Mic On Podcast, 2Baba acknowledged the talent of all major artists but placed Burna Boy at the pinnacle based on his current impact and reach.
“I have my favourite songs from each, from all of them. But if I must be put on the spot, I think Burna is on the top of the game right now,” he stated.
He compared evaluating artists to judging painters, noting each has a unique style and such comparisons are subjective. 2Baba clarified his ranking was based on his observation of the global music landscape, not personal metrics like wealth or achievements.
“I don’t know their bank accounts... But from what I can measure from at least common sense and understanding of the music world, I think right now Burna is at the top of this chain. Not just in Nigeria, in Africa, in the world. He’s on that but everybody’s doing fantastically well,” he explained.
Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido are often considered Nigeria's triumvirate of Afrobeats royalty, sparking endless fan debates over supremacy. 2Baba's perspective, coming from a respected industry elder, adds a significant voice to the conversation, highlighting Burna Boy's perceived dominance in the current era.
