A suspected phone thief was set ablaze by a mob in the Dorayi area of Kano State on Saturday after allegedly attempting to steal a woman's mobile phone. The incident, which left the victim injured, is the latest case of deadly vigilante justice in the state.
Eyewitnesses reported that the suspect tried to snatch the woman's phone, leading to a confrontation. The woman sustained injuries during the struggle and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Before security operatives could arrive, an enraged group of youths overpowered the suspect. “They poured petrol on the suspect and lit the match. He was still moving when the security agents took him. The road has been completely blocked,” said tricycle rider Abba Tilda, who witnessed the event.
The suspect, who was severely burnt, was later taken into custody by security agents for further investigation. As of the time of reporting, the Kano State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
This brutal act of mob justice occurs just weeks after a woman, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children were murdered in the same Dorayi axis, highlighting ongoing security tensions and a trend of extrajudicial violence in the area.
