The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary halt to regular updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account due to a lapse in U.S. government funding. In a statement posted on Saturday, the Mission assured that passport and visa services will continue "as the situation permits."
The Mission stated that its X account “will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information.” This move is a direct consequence of a partial U.S. government shutdown that began after Congress failed to pass a 2026 budget before the midnight deadline.
Despite the funding lapse, the Mission clarified that consular operations are expected to continue. “At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” the statement read.
The public was advised to visit the official U.S. travel website for the latest information on services and operating status. Further updates from the Mission’s social media will only resume once full government operations are restored, barring urgent safety or security matters.
PUNCH Online reported that the shutdown was triggered by a breakdown in budget negotiations, partly driven by Democratic anger over the killing of two protesters in Minneapolis by federal immigration agents. The incident derailed talks concerning new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
