Telecommunications giant MTN has partnered with the Lagos State Government to construct a state-of-the-art bus park at the previously chaotic Obalende under-bridge area. The project, announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, aims to reclaim and transform the public space into a functional, secure, and sustainable transport hub.

The new facility will feature an organized transport terminal, over 60 public toilet fixtures, a recycling drop-off station, and kiosks. Design priorities include enhanced safety and aesthetics, with solar-powered lighting to improve nighttime visibility and boost CCTV effectiveness to deter crime.

Wahab highlighted the environmental innovations, stating, “A biodigester system is also being introduced to sustainably manage wastewater... while a dedicated recycling station will discourage illegal waste disposal.” The park will also include a road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers and security personnel.

Aligning with the state’s climate goals, the project plans to incorporate solar panels and tree planting to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions. This initiative follows recent enforcement actions to clear illegal structures and squatters from the under-bridge.

“This project reflects our resolve to reclaim public spaces, make them functional, sustainable, and safe, and ensure they serve the needs of Lagosians in a modern, responsible way,” Wahab concluded.
