The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack on an Anglican Church in the Lilu community of Ihiala Local Government Area on Sunday morning. A short video of the incident had circulated online, showing people running for safety during the service.
According to a report by Daily Post on Monday 8 November, 2025, some worshippers were injured during the attack, and one person was confirmed dead. The victim was said to be the wife of the presiding clergy of the church.
In a statement released on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the incident. He described the attackers as armed criminals who targeted innocent worshippers.
Ikenga explained that part of the church building was burnt, and some property in the church compound was destroyed. He added that the Commissioner of Police assured the community that the Command would not tolerate actions that threaten peace, safety, or freedom of worship.
He also said security operatives have already launched intelligence-led operations. The Joint Security Team has been deployed to the area, and surveillance has been increased to track those behind the attack.
The police urged residents of Lilu and surrounding communities to stay calm and assist security agencies with useful information. The Command also promised that the suspects would be arrested and prosecuted once investigations are completed.
The statement ended with an assurance that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
