The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has issued a sharp challenge to the Federal Government, condemning its "misplaced priorities" and urging leaders to stop debating semantics while citizens perish from insecurity and poverty.
Speaking at a recent event, Obi expressed frustration over the government's focus on arguing whether the widespread killings amount to a "Christian genocide," a term used by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
“If I were President of Nigeria, my top priority would be protecting the lives and property of citizens,” Obi declared, setting the tone for his address. He directly addressed Trump's inflammatory statements, saying, “President Donald Trump says he wants to invade Nigeria because of alleged Christian genocide. My point is, why should we focus on arguing whether it is ‘Christian genocide’ or not, when Nigerians are dying and being kidnapped every single day?”

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the fundamental issue is the utter lack of safety for all Nigerians, regardless of creed. “Please, it’s not genocide, please it’s not this, but to me, it’s not safe. Come and help,” he pleaded, using a powerful analogy of a hungry family to illustrate the urgency. “Somebody discovered Peter Obi and his family can no longer eat. You’re saying no, well, it’s not true... collect the food first — and then we know how we can ration it. That’s what it is.”
Outlining his blueprint for national recovery, Peter Obi listed three critical areas any serious government must prioritize. “Number one priority is the security of life and property. Number two is to put people out of poverty, because the more you put people out of poverty, the more you reduce criminality. Number three is to invest in education, especially from basic education,” he stated.
He concluded with a stark warning about the consequences of neglecting education, stating that uneducated children of today become the terrorists of tomorrow, and criticized corrupt politicians for looting funds they "don't need."
