"Madam Oil Rice" In Trouble: Edo Police Arraign TikToker For Staging Kidnap To Gain Followers

Edo State Police PRO Moses Yamu briefing press on TikToker arrest

The Edo State Police Command has arraigned a popular TikTok content creator, Osarobo Omoyemen, known online as “Madam Oil Rice,” for allegedly fabricating her own kidnapping story in a desperate bid to gain more followers on the social media platform.

According to a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, the influencer claimed she was kidnapped along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City, rescued by police, and then detained at Akpata Police Station where a sum of N10,000 was allegedly collected as bail.

“Following the report, the command immediately commenced investigation. Findings revealed that the entire story was completely fabricated and deliberate,” SP Yamu stated.

During interrogation, the 24-year-old suspect confessed to the crime. The police revealed that she staged the entire incident solely to generate viral online content and attract a larger following to her TikTok page.

The police strongly condemned the act, noting that the false claim was not only misleading but had the potential to incite public hostility against law enforcement and create unnecessary panic in the state.

“It was also discovered that she deleted an earlier video showing an accomplice appealing to viewers to follow her page, clearly exposing the motive behind the false alarm,” the PPRO added.

The suspect was arrested and subsequently charged to court on November 20, 2025. The police stated that this legal action is intended to serve as a strong deterrent to others who may attempt to misuse social media platforms to create panic or disrupt public peace.

The Edo Police Command further warned residents against the dangers of spreading unverified information and reiterated its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security within the state.
