Tinubu’s $100k Gift is for Five AfroBasket Titles — NBBF President Musa Kida

Musa Kida says Tinubu’s $100k reward celebrates D’Tigress five AfroBasket titles

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and Chairman of NNPCL, Musa Kida, has clarified that the $100,000 reward given to each member of the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, by President Bola Tinubu was a recognition of their decade-long dominance — not just their latest AfroBasket victory.

Speaking in an interview with M4S TV, Kida said, “If the reward for winning AfroBasket is $100,000 this time around, we have won it five times, so that should count for something.”

The reward package, announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima at a reception in the Presidential Villa, also included $50,000 for each technical crew member, a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate for all players and staff, and the conferment of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

D’Tigress recently clinched their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title after defeating Mali 78–64 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The win extended their unbeaten run in the competition to 29 games since 2015, cementing their position as the most dominant women’s basketball team in Africa.

Kida praised the players’ commitment, describing their success as “an embodiment of the Nigerian fighting spirit.” He revealed that since taking office in 2017, the NBBF had maintained a seamless transition between generations of players, closely monitoring their club performances and organising off-season training camps to maintain high standards.

“We are constantly on their case every day, looking at what they are doing, so that once we meet, we are able to continue winning,” Kida said.

He also stressed that D’Tigress’ achievements were no accident, but the result of years of strategic planning, consistent training, and strong teamwork. “No matter what happens, it is very clear they are African queens,” he added.
